Free Legal Assistance Day
St Petersburg University hosted the Free Legal Assistance Day. Eight residents of the Northern Capital of Russia turned for help to the Legal Clinic at St Petersburg University on the Free Legal Assistance Day. Their questions were answered by the University lawyers and specialists from the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights.
St Petersburg residents needed help in protecting their housing, property, social, and environmental rights. They complained about the lack of heating in an apartment building, a flooded basement, and expressed disagreement with the amount of household charges. St Petersburg residents were also interested in what to do to ensure that damaged poplars, planted back in the 1950s, were cut down in the area. There was a question: how to protect yourself when you fell into the hands of scammers and, under their influence, were forced to part with your property. One of the questions with which residents of St Petersburg turned to lawyers was whether the work of an enterprise specialising in the removal and processing of medical waste was legal.
Consultants of the Legal Clinic at St Petersburg University and employees of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in St Petersburg studied all the documents that can helped unravel sometimes very difficult legal issues. Human Rights Commissioner Svetlana Agapitova took control of some of the enquiries; consultants from the University Legal Clinic will continue to work on other enquiries.
Traditionally, the University Legal Clinic provides free legal assistance to certain categories of citizens: students, pensioners, people with disabilities, adoptive parents and anyone whose income does not exceed two and a half subsistence minimums. Consultations are held during academic semesters. Law students, under the supervision of the members of the academic staff, i.e. legal practitioners, answer questions from the fields of labour, civil, administrative, civil procedural, housing and social security law.
