Dagger: The symbol of friendship
We are pleased to invite you to join a fascinating journey through centuries and continents to touch the rich history and culture of the Sultanate of Oman. The Fireplace Lounge in the G.O.R.K.I. Centre at St Petersburg University will host a screening and discussion of the documentary film "Dagger" by RT Arabic.
The film covers a period from the reign of the Yaʿrubid dynasty in the 17th century to the present day. It focuses on the cultural identity of Oman through the prism of a unique object that has become a national symbol, i.e. the legendary dagger of Sayyid Sir Hamoud bin Mohammed Al-Busaidi, the Sultan of Zanzibar, which is now presented in the State Hermitage Museum as a symbol of friendship between Russia and Oman.
After the screening, there will be an open discussion with leading orientalists and Arabists. The discussion will be moderated by Karin Kneissl, Head of the G.O.R.K.I. Centre at St Petersburg University. In the traditional format of "Fireside Talks", we will discuss the distant Arab country that is united with Russia by strong cultural, social, economic and political ties.
The meeting will be held in person in Arabic and English.
