The Bank of Russia issues a silver coin for the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg University
Today, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation has issued a commemorative silver coin ‘300th Anniversary of St Petersburg University’. The total circulation is 3,000 coins. This will perpetuate the celebration of the anniversary of the oldest university in Russia in the history of the country.
The silver coin of three roubles, dedicated to the anniversary of St Petersburg University, was issued as part of the series ‘Historical events’. The pure precious metal weight is 31.1 grams, the alloy fineness is 925. On the front side there is a relief image of the state emblem of the Russian Federation, the inscriptions ‘Russian Federation’ and ‘Bank of Russia’, the denomination and year of issue are indicated. It also shows the designation of the metal according to the periodic table of elements of Dmitri Mendeleev, the alloy fineness, the trademark of the St Petersburg Mint and the pure precious metal weight.

On the reverse side of the coin there are relief images of the Twelve Collegia building, i.e. the main building of St Petersburg University, and the coat of arms of St Petersburg University framed by a pattern of lines made by the laser matting technique. At the top along the circumference is the inscription ‘St Petersburg University’, while at the bottom is the inscription ‘Founded in 1724’.
Since its foundation in 1992, the Bank of Russia, as part of its emission activities, has been issuing commemorative coins made of precious and non-precious metals and investment coins made of precious metals. They are produced by the Moscow Mint and St Petersburg Mint and distinguished by a high level of artistic design, impeccable quality of minting. They are recognised and in steady demand both in Russia and abroad. Distributors of these notes are credit institutions of the Russian Federation and Goznak.
Earlier, as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg University, the postage stamp was issued. It was presented on 8 February on the birthday of St Petersburg University. For the ceremonial event, first day envelopes were issued and a special cancellation stamp was made. In addition, VTB and Sberbank issued a series of payment cards for the University staff and students with a unique design developed for the anniversary of St Petersburg University.
