St Petersburg University AI Centre at the 4th International Forum "Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Window of Opportunity"

The 4th International Forum "Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Window of Opportunity" has taken place in Moscow, bringing together experts from 12 countries, including Brazil, India, China, and Saudi Arabia. More than 70 AI specialists convened to discuss the future of computer intelligence and the ethical challenges in its development. A key outcome of the forum was the signing of the Code of Ethics by 16 new participants.

Vladislav Arkhipov, Head of the Legal Group at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at St Petersburg University, presented a series of discussion points on the fundamental aspects of human interaction with neural networks. He examined large-scale generative models as a qualitatively new technology with the potential to replace individual memory and imagination.

Specialists from the St Petersburg University AI Centre are committed to finding a balance between technological progress and ethical standards. The centre organises numerous events to address the ethical and safe development of AI.

Professor Arkhipov suggested that certain types of AI could be considered "new media", comparing them to a new element of written culture. The expert also addressed the need to adapt ethical approaches with the emergence of each new medium, emphasising the continuity of educational principles. According to Vladislav Arkhipov, this can be achieved by altering the form and content of teaching and assignments, such as reintroducing oral exams and incorporating AI into their organisation.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Professor Arkhipov discussed the criteria of autonomy and integrity in education, considering the integration of computer intelligence, and gave a positive assessment of the event. "The Artificial Intelligence Ethics Forum is a high-level event where we have been able to engage in meaningful discussions on topics ranging from the ethics of privacy invasion in AI training to the use of generative neural networks in the teaching and learning process," commented Vladislav Arkhipov.
