School students from Belarus and Russia meet at St Petersburg University
St Petersburg University has hosted an educational and awareness-raising event ‘Documentary Prose of Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin: Roads and Crossroads’. The meeting was part of the International Student Research Paper Competition for school students from Belarus and Russia.
St Petersburg University has hosted an educational and awareness-raising event ‘Documentary Prose of Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin: Roads and Crossroads’. The meeting was part of the International Student Research Paper Competition for school students from Belarus and Russia.
In his welcoming address, Aleksandr Babich, Senior Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Admissions of St Petersburg University, noted that the competition is not only a good incentive to study literature, but also an opportunity to learn about the common history of the Russian and Belarusian peoples, as well as a chance to continue education at St Petersburg University.
The contest ‘Literary destinies of Belarus and Russia: from dialogue to understanding’ is included in the Regulations for Admission to St Petersburg University in 2023. The winners of the contest get points as an individual achievement, taken into account for admission to St Petersburg University.

‘The schoolchildren from the Republic of Belarus – the winners of this literary contest – will be certainly offered admission to relevant academic programmes and specialisations at St Petersburg University,’ Aleksandr Babich added.
In 2023, the contest is dedicated to the literary work of two outstanding writers: Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin. During the event, representatives of the contest’s partner institutions spoke about: the impact of World War II on the writings of Ales Adamovich and Daniil Granin; genre characteristics of documentary prose; and the historical events that served as a background for The Blockade Book – a unique chronicle of the life of Leningrad besieged during the Great Patriotic War. The event was attended by: Liudmila Ikonnikova, Academic Secretary of the Yanka Kupala Institute of Literary Studies of the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus; Anna Kislitsyna, Head of the Department of Theory and History of Literature of the Yanka Kupala Institute of Literary Studies of the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus; and Olga Andreeva, Head of Daniil Granin Library No 9 of the Nevskaya Centralised Library System in St Petersburg.
Among the contest’s partners are: the Centre for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus; Daniil Granin Library No 9 of the Nevskaya Centralised Library System in St Petersburg; Minsk Centralised System of State Public Libraries; and the Sputnik Belarus News Agency.
The international competition ‘Literary destinies of Belarus and Russia: from dialogue to understanding’ is held by St Petersburg University with the support of the representative office of the Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Compatriots Living Abroad, and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) in the Republic of Belarus. The contest provides a unique platform for studying the cultural heritage of the two brotherly nations.
