SPbU rector honoured with Russian Federation religious and state awards
During his visit to St Petersburg University, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ presented one of the highest awards of the Russian Orthodox Church to SPbU Rector and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolay Kropachev.
By the decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, in recognition of his assistance in the restoration of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul at St Petersburg University and on the occasion of his 65th birthday, SPbU Rector Nikolay Kropachev was awarded the Order of Saint Blessed Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky III degree.
The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul was established for university students in the Twelve Collegia building in the 1830s. During his visit to the University, His Holiness consecrated the restored church. He also presented the University with commemorative medals dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the Patriarchal enthronement and a collection of his works, which will enrich the collection of the SPbU M. Gorky Scientific Library.

During the solemn ceremony in the assembly hall, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of SPbU, and University alumnus Dmitry Medvedev presented the SPbU Rector with the Order of Merit to the Fatherland II degree, awarded by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. The Order was awarded for significant contributions to science and education, to the training of highly qualified specialists, and many years of conscientious work.
"I am grateful for the honour bestowed upon me and highly value the awards given by His Holiness Patriarch and the main alumnus of St Petersburg University, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. This recognition is not only for my efforts but also for the many years of dedicated work of the entire staff of St Petersburg University, its contribution to the development of science and education, as well as its work in protecting and strengthening traditional spiritual and moral values. Throughout its three-century history, the University has been a pillar of the state and has contributed to solving the most significant issues, engaged in the upbringing of youth, and supported statehood. I am confident that we will continue to educate future professionals of the highest level, capable of solving the most complex tasks for the benefit of Russia," noted SPbU Rector, member of the Council for Coordination with Religious Organisations under the President of Russia, member of the Council for Science and Education under the President of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Nikolay Kropachev.
The Rector of St Petersburg University is a recipient of state awards of Russia and foreign countries: the Order of Honour (2004), the Order of Merit to the Fatherland IV degree (2009) and III degree (2014), the Order of Alexander Nevsky (2019). Nikolay Kropachev has also been awarded departmental awards, including the Anatoly Koni Medal and the Mikhail Speransky medal of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, as well as honorary signs "For Merit to St Petersburg" and "For Contribution to the Development of the Leningrad Region". Nikolay Kropachev has been awarded the President of the Russian Federation’s Prize in the field of education (2001), Mikhail Speransky Russian Law Award (2015), the diploma of the laureate of the highest legal prize "Lawyer of the Year" in the nomination "Legal Science and Education" (2010), and numerous other awards and honorary titles.
